Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Employee & Family Assistance Program?
The Employee & Family Assistance Program (EFAP) is a service that provides confidential, professional assistance to employees and their families to resolve problems that affect their personal lives and in some cases their job performance. Participation in the program is voluntary.
Why is the EFAP needed?
Each of us, regardless of our position in an organization, may face a variety of problems in our daily lives. Usually, we can work them out. Sometimes our problems become too much for us to handle and they affect our personal happiness, our relationships with others, our performance at work, or our health. When this occurs, we need help in resolving the problems. Without proper attention, these problems can become worse and the consequences are often unpleasant and expensive. Early intervention towards the resolution of the problem can make a real difference. When personal problems begin to impact an employee’s functioning, job performance, or the morale of fellow workers, the EFAP may be useful in assisting the employee to address the problem.
What assistance can I expect to receive?
The EFAP is an offer of help that is confidential. Once you have contacted the EFAP, the nearest EFAP counsellor will contact you within 24 hours to make an appointment.
After your concern has been discussed with the counsellor, he/she will recommend the actions that can help you most. Usually, client problems can be addressed in four to six (one hour) sessions or less. If needed, the counsellor will discuss whether or not limited additional sessions may be made available to you. Counselling sessions are always offered to a client outside of their work hours and always away from the workplace.
What kinds of problems will the EFAP address?
The EFAP deals with problems that affect an employee’s personal well-being which may affect job performance. Problems include, but are not limited to:
- Emotional/psychological,
- Alcohol and/or drug abuse
- Family and/or marital issues.
- Financial or legal counselling is not available through the EFAP but your counsellor can refer you to resources that can help you.
Who can access the EFAP?
If you are a current employee, you are eligible. This program is also available to an employee’s spouse or common-law partner and dependent children. Call EFAP for more details.
What will the EFAP cost me?
The assessment, counselling and/or referral service is provided at no cost to eligible employees and their families.
What if I need to cancel a session?
There may be an occasion when you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, but please cancel only when absolutely necessary, and provide as much notice as possible. Remember, the counsellor has scheduled that time for you.
If you need to cancel or reschedule, immediately call the counsellor or the number shown on the back of this brochure. The counsellor may then be able to use that time to see other clients who need assistance.
Will my cultural differences be considered?
If there are cultural elements that you feel are important, BCI will try to accommodate them as best as possible. You can help by letting us or the counsellor know of your preferences.
Will my counsellor preferences be considered?
If you have specific preferences for a counsellor, (for example, a female counsellor) BCI will attempt to accommodate your preferences. This is determined by the availability of qualified counsellors in your area.
