40 students from around the district participated in the 2nd annual Student Voice Forum held at the District Development Center on Jan. 21st. The theme of this years’ forum was “Life After School”, and it was created for students to discuss how schools prepare them for non-academic activities that they might encounter following grade 12. The day ran from 9 until 3 with a half hour for lunch (Subway was provided for all participants). This year’s guest speaker, Mr. Larry Espe-Superintendent of School District 60, spoke to the students on issues relevant to our schools here in Fort St. John, while making reference to the forum’s theme.
This forum was the follow-up conference for the Vancouver-Based Forum held back in November. Four students (Michael Van Nostrand, Chantelle Gray, Aislinn Gentles, and Stevie Mazur) and one advisor (Jason Gill) attended the conference and had the opportunity to sit down with the minister of education to discuss the same theme. A special thanks goes out to the teacher (Mr. Tony Lee) and students from the Bert Bowes Leadership class for hosting the event and putting in the volunteered hours needed to make this year’s forum such a great success.
