Recognizing the tragic discovery at Kamloops Residential School

In recognition of the discovery of the remains of 215 children on the grounds of the Kamloops Residential School our schools will take time together on June 3, 2021 to learn more.

Dr Niigaan Sinclair stated, [there is] “no reconciliation without truth and we should all stand up together.”

Flags will be half-masted until further notice.

On June 3

  • Students and staff are encouraged to wear orange
  • A moment of silence will be observed
  • A video created by students at the Sk’elep School of Excellence will be shared with staff and students – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0YYkvIWbng

Schools and classrooms in age appropriate contexts will have additional ways they explore and learn about the tragic history of Residential Schools in Canada. Our work along the lines of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission calls to action and learning about Canada’s treatment of Indigenous peoples is ongoing. This discovery brings again to the forefront the importance of this learning and work.
